What exactly did you do? How can I reproduce this?

Sorry for the initial lack of details. Added 'Learn a new recipe' as a subtask of 'Research martian weather'

'Learn a new recipe' belongs to the project: Inbox
'Research martian weather' belongs to the project: Trip to mars

If the two tasks don't belong to the same project, it's expected that you won't see them in the project view. How did you make it happen in your first screenshot?

I just licked on the "trip to mars" project link on the left side, its the default view

But you switched to the Inbox project to create the task?

May be link to this issue: https://github.com/go-vikunja/vikunja/issues/782

Although I don't understand what the OP means because the two screenshots are in the same project. What changed between screenshot 1 and 2? @alvarolm, did you reload and the subtask just disappeared?

@kolaente Just for info though, you do see child tasks in the project of the parent task even if the child is in a different project (which is great!), see this example:

...but you don't see those child tasks in the Kaban view (which is good and expected!), nor in the Gantt view (there it would actually be great to have the option to display child tasks - even if they are in a different project, because they still have a relationship to the current project- , say with a tick box to "Show all child tasks" like we have a tick box to "Show task without dates").

It sounds like everything you're describing here is kind of expected? I'd consider this therefore solved, please ping if you still have issues.
