Check Existing Issues

  • I have searched for all existing open AND closed issues and discussions for similar requests. I have found none that is comparable to my request.

Verify Feature Scope

  • I have read through and understood the scope definition for feature requests in the Issues section. I believe my feature request meets the definition and belongs in the Issues section instead of the Discussions.

Problem Description

This project is out of control, there is a an absolute lack of governance.

I am running quadlet defined podman containers inside a pod.

Every time I update the image, it then sits there and downloads a heap of files. As a container is ephemeral every restart does the same thing because downloaded files are lost at reboot.

Last month there was a promise that 7.3 would be released to fix with MCP tools and guess what it didn't happen weeks go by and then suddenly 8.x.x is released.

I think I have made up my mind to move away, as the devs are not listening to the community, they are not included good features, I am not sure what they are doing. The roadmap is disorganised and disjointed and cannot make any correlation between it and the constant stream of "new features"

Desired Solution you'd like

something that is not constantly breaking

Alternatives Considered

AnythingLLM for a better RAG outcome

Additional Context

@ShirasawaSama commented on GitHub (Mar 5, 2026):

I suspect this is caused by the unstructured library. I find its documentation extremely poorly written, and it downloads massive amounts of files every time it runs. There also seems to be no way to pre-download these files.

For actual production environments, I personally recommend setting up a separate file parsing service. This avoids impacting OpenWebUI and significantly reduces the size of the packaged image.

If you absolutely must use Unstructured, I suggest trying to call its API during image build to parse pre-placed documentation files, triggering automatic downloads.

Mcp tools are fixed in 0.8.x though?

Feel free to open an actual issue if you have any problems still.

@meremortals70 I do agree, the project is very disorganized. That said, even with all the issues and bugs this project has, I haven't found anything else remotely close to what OpenWebUI offers.

Depends what you are looking for. I have had to stop the container as it downloaded 500GB in 24 hours, nothing in logs

@meremortals70 sounds like you didnt configure the data directory properly, so it's redownloading the models every time it boots.
