Changelog Entry

Description

  • Fixed an issue where web search and image generation built-in tools were automatically attached to all requests for models with native function calling capability, regardless of whether the user enabled these features via the UI integrations toggle buttons. This caused unnecessary token usage as tool schemas were included in every request even when the features were disabled.

Changed

  • Modified get_builtin_tools() in backend/open_webui/utils/tools.py to check the features parameter before adding web search and image generation tools, ensuring they are only included when explicitly enabled by the user via UI toggles.

Fixed

  • Token Usage Optimization: Web search tools (search_web, fetch_url) are now only added to requests when the user explicitly enables web search via the UI toggle button, preventing unnecessary token consumption when the feature is disabled.
  • Token Usage Optimization: Image generation tools (generate_image, edit_image) are now only added to requests when the user explicitly enables image generation via the UI toggle button, preventing unnecessary token consumption when the feature is disabled.
  • Feature Toggle Consistency: Built-in tools now consistently respect the UI toggle state, matching the behavior of memory tools which already had this check implemented.

Additional Information

  • This fix only affects native function calling mode. Non-native function calling uses separate RAG-style handlers that already respect the features parameter.
  • The change ensures that when users toggle off web search or image generation in the UI, those tool schemas are not sent to the model, reducing input token costs.
  • This maintains backward compatibility - when features are enabled via UI toggles, tools are still added as before.
