Description

The DeepSeek R1 model, which is designed to simulate a "thinking" process, is currently unable to generate appropriate titles for conversations in the Open Web UI environment. Instead of meaningful titles, conversations are consistently labeled with <think> followed by repetitive phrases, as seen in the attached screenshot.

This issue impacts usability as it makes it difficult to distinguish between conversations at a glance, especially when managing multiple threads. The problem seems to occur consistently with this model, even when the functionality to generate titles is expected.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Use the DeepSeek R1 model in the Open Web UI environment running in Docker.
  2. Initiate a conversation with the model.
  3. Check the title assigned to the conversation in the sidebar.

Observed Behavior

  • The conversation titles default to <think> or similar placeholder-like phrases, lacking meaningful or context-relevant titles.

Expected Behavior

  • The model should generate concise, contextually appropriate titles based on the conversation content.

Additional Context

  • The screenshot attached illustrates the repetitive placeholder titles.
  • This issue does not seem to occur with other models in the same environment.

Environment

  • Operating System: Ubuntu 24.04
  • Docker Version: Docker version 27.1.0, build 6312585
  • Open WebUI Version: 0.5.7 (running in Docker)
  • Ollama Version: 0.5.7 (installed locally on the server)
  • Setup: Open Web UI is running in Docker and is pointing to the locally installed Ollama on the server.

Would appreciate guidance on whether this is a known issue or if there's a workaround to improve title generation. Thank you!

This was first logged to my knowledge in "Improve the chat titles #8895" but then it was converted this into a discussion

You can see the discussion here, it does include a work around.

I think I have the same situation, however in my case, the tag is on the body response.

I'm running latest update, also under docker.
