As an Obsidian user, the notes feature is a really nice concept, I have some additional suggestion for consideration, but understand if these don't align with the planned direction of Notes.

  • Real basic WYSIWYG controls for Markdown (some people might also find it useful for Chat)
  • A save button (yes exiting saves, but it is not intuitive)
  • Relocate the "create note" icon to the top (minimise mouse movement)
  • Search
  • Folders or Categories
  • In Chat an Action Button to save message to Notes (realise this could get complicated, with different user preferences)
  • Changes to Enhance
    - Ability to work on a selection of text, not the entire note
    - Ability to review \ accept \ reject the proposed AI enhance changes

Some unimportant advice:
Why not adding the note beneath chat ? When chat is folded, there's nothing more. And I suppose many would prefer a note system similar to the chat one, so they can create folders like notebooks and sort things up. We can also attach tags and other information needed.

Thank you!

I have observed that Enhancing of a note translate voice transcription to the language of interface. This is weird.. I would notes left on the same language they were transcribed. I thought this is possible to fix with some Notes related system prompt to the model which is used for Enhancing, but couldn't find it. In any case great to have such option (some chackbox) to translate note or not.

I would like to add two references for real time audio transcription that could be of interest for open webui

Unmute is a system that allows text LLMs to listen and speak by wrapping them in Kyutai's Text-to-speech and Speech-to-text models. The speech-to-text transcribes what the user says, the LLM generates a response in text, and the text-to-speech reads it out loud. Both the STT and TTS are optimized for low latency and the system works with any text LLM you like.

release the Voxtral models to accelerate this future. These state‑of‑the‑art speech understanding models are available in two sizes—a 24B variant for production-scale applications and a 3B variant for local and edge deployments. Both versions are released under the Apache 2.0 license, and are also available on our API.

Integration of unmute could be definitely be a game changer , the demo is quite impressive

  • Add "Notes" as a checkbox option for base model settings, so the admin can hide certain base models from the notes section (in case the model doesn't work well with notes, because it's a weak model, for example).
  • Even hidden models are visible and accessible in the notes section (Bug).
  • Allow admins to set a custom default model for notes for all users.
  • Add a permission to control whether users can publicly share notes.
  • Allowing to copy text as raw markdown
  • When copying text (i.e. a checklist) there will be a lot of extra newlines added out of nowhere
  • allow to export note as .docx?
  • While pressing SHIFT key, notes three-dot-menu gets replaced with quick action to delete the note
  • exported PDFs are HUGE
  • exported PDFs do not look that nice, text is aligned on the very left edge of the PDF, markdown not properly rendered
  • Strip Reasoning content of models like Claude Sonnet 4.5 when in (selective) edit mode (currently reasoning content gets inserted, which is not wanted)
  • Only allow editing of the note if anything is selected - to edit the entire note, CTRL+A should be used - uninformed users or new users might be confused and enable the edit button and then accidentally have the AI rewrite the entire note. If the entire note should be rewritten, CTRL+A should be used - if edit mode is turned on and nothing is selected, the user should be informed that he needs to select a text which should be edited.

I think it's not necessary, same as for chats, why more/different restriction to users?

Why .docx and not .odt, .pdf, or other formats?

  • the pdf exportation could be improved. Personally, I thought the previous way of pdf exporting chats was much better, it needed a few tweaks but it was much more efficient.

@rgaricano you can also publicly share notes for EVERY user to see your note in their notes overview menu, similar to publicly sharing a prompt with everyone and write permission set - everyone will be able to see it.

That's why you need a permission toggle to prevent public sharing..

I think it would be very useful to have the ability to attach a note directly to a folder or a group. This would move the tool closer to a project management use case.

Example workflow:

  • I create a folder.
  • I associate a group of people with it.
  • In the folder interface, I have a tab where I can record and store notes (text or audio) related to team meetings on that project.

This way, the folder becomes a coherent space gathering all information related to a project (documents, participants, meeting notes, etc.).

When selecting "All," I realized that all notes set as private became visible, so I hurriedly disabled the notes feature.

I thought it might be a migration issue and tried creating a new note, but even with visibility set to Private, all users can see the note.

Should I register this as an issue?

Also, after the new year, I checked the list of notes and noticed that the sorting is incorrect, causing newly created notes to be buried and hard to find.

Hi

I have a couple of feature suggestions that could enhance the notes functionality:

  1. Public Notes Sharing: It would be great to add the ability to make notes public. This way, users could share notes with others via a link, allowing recipients to view and edit them without needing an account in the app. This would promote collaboration and easy sharing of information.

  2. Reminder Notifications: Another useful feature would be the option to set a reminder date on a note, which triggers an in-app notification at the specified time. This could help users stay on top of tasks and deadlines.

These additions would make the app more versatile for personal and collaborative use. Let me know if you'd like more details or if I can help with implementation ideas!

Best,

Hi, I went through this issue and the related discussions — it looks like this is an umbrella thread covering a wide range of possible “notes” functionality.
I’d like to propose a very small, UI-only MVP that addresses one specific pain point mentioned here, and wanted to check alignment before attempting any implementation.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦:
In long chat sessions, users often want to preserve specific steps / instructions / insights without breaking flow by scrolling back later.
Currently, there’s no lightweight way to reference or “pin” important parts of a conversation.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐕𝐏 (𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝):

  • Allow users to select a portion of text within a chat message
  • Provide a simple “Save as note / reference” action (e.g. context menu or inline action)

𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐬:

  • associated with the current conversation
  • visible persistently (e.g. minimal indicator, small panel, or reference list)
  • Focus is on selected text, not entire messages

𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐕𝐏:

  • AI rewriting / enhancement
  • Templates
  • Collaboration or sharing
  • Permissions / roles
  • Search, folders, export/import
  • Backend or schema changes (unless required)

The goal would be to establish a minimal foundation for referencing chat content before layering on more advanced notes features.

I’d like to propose a very small, UI-only MVP that addresses one specific pain point mentioned here, and wanted to check alignment before attempting any implementation. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦: In long chat sessions, users often want to preserve specific steps / instructions / insights without breaking flow by scrolling back later. Currently, there’s no lightweight way to reference or “pin” important parts of a conversation. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐕𝐏 (𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝): - Allow users to select a portion of text within a chat message - Provide a simple “Save as note / reference” action (e.g. context menu or inline action) 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐬: - associated with the current conversation - visible persistently (e.g. minimal indicator, small panel, or reference list) - Focus is on selected text, not entire messages 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐕𝐏: - AI rewriting / enhancement - Templates - Collaboration or sharing - Permissions / roles - Search, folders, export/import - Backend or schema changes (unless required) The goal would be to establish a minimal foundation for referencing chat content before layering on more advanced notes features. Would this be an acceptable first step within the scope of this issue, or would you prefer this to be tracked separately?

I believe the 3 improvements I posted as discussion for Audio transcription would be quite intertwined with the notes: https://github.com/open-webui/open-webui/discussions/20378

It would be helpful if the search list of the notes would also consider "All", such that users can see all notes, irrespective of the permissions read/write so the second list would be something like All/Write/Read Only

Hi, I wanted to bring up a feature that existed in previous versions but seems to have been removed — the "Send to Note" button on chat messages.
In older versions, there was a direct button on each chat message that allowed users to instantly save that message's content to a note. This was extremely useful for quickly capturing useful information from conversations without interrupting the workflow.
In the current version (v0.8.5), this button is no longer present. Users are now forced to manually open the Notes section, find or create a note, and copy-paste the content — which breaks the flow significantly.
It would be great to see this restored as part of the ongoing Notes enhancements. Ideally:

A "Send to Note" button visible on hover over each message
Option to append to an existing note or create a new one

This would make the Notes feature much more practical and tightly integrated with the chat experience.
Thanks for the great work on this project! 👍

I cannot remember that this button ever existed. Are you sure you didn't just add a custom action?

As people seem to collect feature requests on notes here, two ideas/wishes from my side, i think this would greatly increase usability for lay users:

  • Option to constrain the models available for the chat" feature in notes, currently it lists all available models, even models not enabled for native tool calling, or models otherwise not well suited for such a task
  • Saving the model that was used to create (or last edit) a note, and pre-selecting this model as the default for further "chats with that note"

how about adding category/folder/tags for notes? this will be extremely helpful if planned to use notes heavily.

  • Add support for switching between raw markdown and rich/rendered markdown
  • Allow user to make changes to tables (e.g. add or remove columns & rows)
