What is the issue?

I was trying to run the (new) embedding example:

curl http://10.0.3.22:11434/api/embed -d '{
  "model": "all-minilm",
  "input": ["Why is the sky blue?", "Why is the grass green?"]
}'

Which triggered a crash (i did pull the model first). Note that it crashes for some models but works for others. Llama 3.1 works just fine for instance.

The output you can probably do something with:

Special emphasis on this line:

Index out of bounds perhaps? I don't get how/where/what with that error as ollama is a Go application and this error is C++..

Originally created by @markg85 on GitHub (Aug 9, 2024). Original GitHub issue: https://github.com/ollama/ollama/issues/6289 Originally assigned to: @dhiltgen on GitHub. ### What is the issue? I was trying to run the (new) embedding example: ``` curl http://10.0.3.22:11434/api/embed -d '{ "model": "all-minilm", "input": ["Why is the sky blue?", "Why is the grass green?"] }' ``` Which triggered a crash (i did pull the model first). Note that it crashes for some models but works for others. Llama 3.1 works just fine for instance. The output you can probably do something with: ``` Aug 09 20:08:14 newphobos ollama[5501]: time=2024-08-09T20:08:14.014+02:00 level=DEBUG source=amd_linux.go:440 msg="updating rocm free memory" gpu=0 I think the reason why you're seeing C++ headers is that Ollama is utilizing llama.cpp as a backend. I suggest you may also post your issue there, if you haven't already.

I don't see how or why i should go there. I'm not using llama.cpp directly at all and the logging doesn't show much of it either. It would be a rather useless error with not much to go on, right?

I would love to help out where it makes sense but here i don't really see how i can help.

Since it only happens on your specific GPU, ROCm could also be the cause.

However, I think the issue is not related to ollama specifically. 🤔

In case you still have this issue, if you have access to docker give the Ollama Docker Image a try. Look for AMD GPU in the README. The reason I suggest this is because I've had some odd dependency issues when trying to get GPU acceleration to work on my host system. However, with the Docker Image it works flawlessly for me. Maybe it's something similar for you, but in your case it causes the error you've mentioned. I think it's worth a try, what do you think?

Pff, well, i tried to stay away from docker images as i'm using distribution updates no (arch linux). While they are fast in updates, i do occasionally catch myself wanting to update to a later version that isn't in their repos yet.

In other terms, yeah, i should probably try the docker image. I'm curious even if it's slightly off-topic. Is there a way to automatically update docker images? As i'm not really a fan of having to pull the image again, finding my exec line and get it up and running again. Sure, it works, but it's a bit of a hassle which i already have enough in docker so adding another one isn't something i look forward too...

According to the docs, there is --pull=always

I'm curious if this fixes it for you.

As others have pointed out, this may be a llama.cpp bug. I haven't been able to reproduce, but I don't have the exact same setup. We did update llama.cpp in 0.3.5 and other ROCm users have reported it resolved different crash scenarios.

Hmm, oke.

Docker + ollama question. I'd like to be able to keep using ollama pull and all other ollama tools that you get on a native install. You lose that with docker (sudo docker exec .... ). note the extra addition of sudo in the docker case too.

Yes, i know, i can make things easier (user-level docker) and playing with command line aliases to get some functionality back. It's just a lot of fiddly annoyances to get it working ok'ish. But i much prefer if i could tell ollama to use the api that's running in the docker image. I don't know if that's possible? It would be if ollama is split in a service and an api part where the service is essentially a tool connecting to the api and running commands.

and there's still the update part that i'd now have to do myself instead of just updating system packages :( yeah, not a fan of this approach through docker. Seems like my choices are gonna boil down to discomfort on the one side or waiting for system updates (and taking the hit when that takes long) on the other side.

The way I'm using Ollama is as follows:

I'm using the ollama client supplied by my distro and have the ollama daemon running in docker. This works because the CLI tool is just trying to reach Ollama running on port 11434 locally. My distro is lacking behind a little bit but so far I haven't run into any problems. And if I get any problem I'd probably run ollama within docker and it'll be just fine. This way I have best of both worlds so to speak.

Seems like my choices are gonna boil down to discomfort on the one side or waiting for system updates (and taking the hit when that takes long) on the other side. The way I'm using Ollama is as follows: I'm using the ollama client supplied by my distro and have the ollama daemon running in docker. This works because the CLI tool is just trying to reach Ollama running on port 11434 locally. My distro is lacking behind a little bit but so far I haven't run into any problems. And if I get any problem I'd probably run ollama within docker and it'll be just fine. This way I have best of both worlds so to speak.

@markg85 are you still seeing the crash on the latest release?

Hi @dhiltgen! Nope, doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. Closing this one.

For future reference. I didn't change anything besides just being up to date.
