Interesting approach. I don't think the first {{.prompt}} will really get populated. And the first prompt will be the same as the second. I think you are going to have to do this in code. So you can ask the user for the topic, and then populate the system prompt with that topic and have the model come up with a question. every input from the user after that would continue the conversation. but those would have to use a different system prompt from the first.

Does this make sense?

It's a cool idea.

Thanks. It does make sense. Go template's allow logic, so I think I'll just have to read the code to see how to do it.

It seems to be a model issue more than anything, as I get the same error interactively at the CLI and in ellma.
