This is indeed a missing feature which was already requested in #3710. There is currently an open pull request that is to be reviewed (#6408), so this feature might be included in v1.9.0 once that pull request gets merged. ;)

Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
