Modern web applications seldom open in-site links in a new tab.

You could open new tabs by "Ctrl (win) + Click" or "Command (mac) + Click" when you'd like to.

especially hosted on other services like gitlab or github

For out-side links, maybe it is not bad but it causes inconsistent user experiences (when in-site links are in the same tab).

While I think "Ctrl+Click" / "Command+Click" would work for all cases well.
