I'd like to be able to change the period in the statistics. Having a start and end date, for example, would be a real plus for this page.

Yep, I've also mentioned that when reviewing that page.
From my side, giving a start and end date is definitely the intended behavior, plus depending on implementation, it even allows for reproducible URLs.
