What is this Python project?

Themis provides high-level cryptosystems for socket protection, general asymmetric protection, symmetric container for various use-cases (length preserving encryption, auth-tagged encryption, encryption with additional context), zero-knowledge proof system for secure authentication.

Themis works on ~10 platforms, originally a C library, with Python being one of first and most frequently used high-level interfaces to it.

What's the difference between this Python project and similar ones?

There are no directly similar ones, yet Themis provides high-level security services similar to LibSodium (apart from ZKP, which LibSodium does not aim to provide, focusing on novel takes on traditional auth schemes). However, Themis bases it on more classic cryptography and aims it's cryptosystems to be easilty integrateable into any workflows (various call models for interactive protocols, key-based ciphersuite choice, etc.).
