Verified feature request does not already exist?

  • I have searched and found no existing issue

💻

  • Would you like to implement this feature?

Pitch: what problem are you trying to solve?

The process to update Actual on Desktop is VERY cumbersome and unintuitive. There isn't even anything in the docs that explains how to do this. When an update is available for Actual on the Desktop app, the user must go to the download page on the Actual website, download the update, make a backup of their old files, then install the newer version of Actual, and open their files in the newer version.

Describe your ideal solution to this problem

When an update is available, notify the user (like Actual already does) but allow the user to click a button in the app itself to begin the update process.
Currently, there is already a popup that is displayed when an update is available with a link to read the update notes, therefore add a button on this popup to update the software. Thus, the user would see two options: a button to read the update notes, and a button to update the software.

The Affinity apps are a good example of how this can be accomplished: offline software that can not only detect when an update is available but extract & install the update for the user, upon the user's request.
