Verified issue does not already exist?

  • I have searched and found no existing issue

What happened?

When applying my budget template, not all categories were populated.

On further inspection it seems as though categories that had money "Budgeted" during the current month are ignored if the "Apply Budget Template" is run again in the same month.

This could pose a problem for people who are paid off a regular schedule, weekly pay for example or fortnightly, this would need testing on a test budget of course but it does seem to point to that being the reason and could do with being resolved.

I wouldn't want the category overwritten if the template was run again in the same month but the budgeted amount would be incremented onto the template value.

What error did you receive?

None

Where are you hosting Actual?

Fly.io

What browsers are you seeing the problem on?

Microsoft Edge

Operating System

Windows 11

My only initial comment would be that there are already example templates given in the documentation for those who need weekly or two weekly fills.

EDIT - subject of course to @shall0pass helpful insights below!

CAVEAT- I have never used anything other than monthly funding and I cannot at this moment envisage when I would want to fill the full allocation twice in the same month.I am sure I may be missing something!

COMMENT - since this behaviour is by design (to prevent accidental overfills) this is maybe a Feature request rather than a Bug?

I could see implementing an increment ONLY if it was a per category command. I wouldn't want my electric, water, or mortgage to start double budgeting.

I would more likely use the "transfer to another category" button to add additional for the month. As @Kidglove57 says, there is a weekly spending target that will fund the category based on the number of weeks in the month. The caveat, of course, is that it all goes in the category at the same time and isn't put in on a weekly basis.
