Pitch: what problem are you trying to solve?

When budgeting for future or irregular expenses (such as annual insurance payments, holiday spending, or emergency savings), users must manually calculate and track how much they need to set aside each month. This process can be tedious and error-prone, especially when budgeting for multiple long-term goals at once.

Without built-in support for saving goals or recurring targets, users lack automated guidance on how much to assign to each category to stay on track. This increases cognitive load and can lead to underfunding or budgeting inconsistencies over time.

Describe your ideal solution to this problem

Introducing targets (also known as funding goals or planned contributions) that users can assign to individual budget categories. These targets would act as automated reminders or suggestions for how much to budget in a given period, based on the user's savings plan.

There could be several types of targets in addition of the already implemented Monthly Funding Target :

  • Weekly/Biweekly Funding Target : A fixed amount the user wants to budget into a category every 1 or 2 weeks (e.g., $100/ 1 or 2 week for a car payment).
  • By Date Target : A total amount the user wants to have saved by a specific future date, with automatic monthly contribution suggestions (e.g., save $1,200 for insurance by December).
  • Target Balance : A specific amount the user wants to maintain in a category at all times (e.g., keep $500 in an emergency fund).

Each target type would guide users by showing how much they need to budget this month to stay on track. Optional visual indicators (like color changes or progress bars [was already suggested and maybe implemented?]) can highlight underfunded categories.

Benefits

  • Reduces manual calculations and improves budgeting accuracy
  • Encourages better long-term planning for infrequent or large expenses
  • Makes budgeting more user-friendly and less error-prone
  • Helps users stay disciplined with saving and category funding
