Verified feature request does not already exist?

  • I have searched and found no existing issue

💻

  • Would you like to implement this feature?

Pitch: what problem are you trying to solve?

What

This is a practical issue I have been facing for some time and haven't found a work around.

So, let's suppose there is one main savings account that one would like to put all their savings, including those towards various long-term expenses, for example, car, house, holidays, and rainy day savings. Currently there is no way to see how much amount is inside each of these "envelopes" as all of them sit under the same account.

Now, one can make separate accounts inside the Actual Budgeting environment, however, that makes reconciliation difficult. So as I understand, one either gives up and easy view into how much is saved towards each goal or reconciliation easy.

Current workaround

One can tag the individual transactions made into this main saver account, in the notes and then in the reports section, view it as a sum of all transaction with that note in it.

Describe your ideal solution to this problem

  • The ideal solution that I can think of is to have an option to make a sub-account that shows how much amount it holds.
  • One can make a deposit either into the "main" account or into a sub-account.
  • The total balance of the account is the sum of sub-accounts and the main account. This would make reconciliation very easy.

Teaching and learning

  • A plus option next to the "main" account name, to add a sub-account would make it very discoverable.
  • The documentation would include how to create a sub-account and what is the idea behind giving users this option of creating a sub-account.
  • I don't foresee at the moment, what kind of issue a user may face with the issue.
