What happened?

Hey I'm a fan of actual budget and I'm trying to incorporate it more into my life.

However I'm finding some large hangups that make it hard to use for my use case.

I have simpleFIN connected and syncing some investment accounts.

I see two issues with investment accounts.

  1. The most recent transaction is buying some investments. Even though the accounts balance has not changed it decreases by the amount bought.
  2. As investment values change the total running balance will begin to drift from the actual balance since the running balance in the accounts calculated from transactions and there are no transactions from appreciating/depreciating investment values..

I can think of a few ways to fix this.

  • Maybe allow some kind of category that gets filtered out of the total running balance. Would allow users to setup rules to automatically sort our transactions that don't affect the balance. This would only fix number #1.
  • Allow an option to get the running balance from whatever simpleFIN reports latest. This is the one I would prefer but its probably not super straightforward.

How can we reproduce the issue?

  2. Connect simpleFIN to actualbudget

  7. observer running balances are different

There are already a few feature requests to add more investment functionality. Since this isn't a bug, Ill close this. For the time being I recommend adjusting investment balances on some regular interval, either manually or by using the reconcile feature. Many people use different apps to track investments since Actual is not currently designed to do that outside of adding in a balance for reference and tracking purposes.
