Verified issue does not already exist?

  • I have searched and found no existing issue
  • I will be providing steps how to reproduce the bug (in most cases this will also mean uploading a demo budget file)

What happened?

A bug happened! Hello, I have been using Local Installation of Actual Budget to budget then a scary water incident to my laptop pushed me to move everything on the cloud in PikaPods. I have around 6 months of data in my local budget, I clicked the "Export Data" button got a zip file (attached below) and when I tried to upload into PikaPods Actual - it gave me an error (attached screenshot below). Please help me troubleshoot as I think based on my clumsiness my budget being on the cloud is best!

[budget link redacted]

Where are you hosting Actual?

Pikapods

What browsers are you seeing the problem on?

Chrome

Operating System

Mac OSX

Hi!

I've removed the uploaded budget for your privacy. It contains all the financial transactions + notes for you. I don't think you wanted to share that with the internet :)

But to answer your problem: the exported file is using v24.10.0 (latest version) whereas pikapods is still on v24.9.0.

You have a couple options:

  1. wait a few days for pikapods to update to v24.10.0 (you can see the active version in the settings page)
  2. download the desktop app and connect that to your pikapods server - and then upload your budget file and use the desktop app - https://actualbudget.org/download
  3. a lot more complicated and technical solution: open the budget archive, open the database file, delete the last migrations from the __migrations__ table, zip the file again and then upload to pikapods

Let me know how it goes

Hello, good call! thanks so much for removing my budget file - but thanks so much for the help! that makes so much sense since I did just update my github this morning. I followed your second advice and downloaded the app and now it works!

Then, once a couple of days passed and pikapods updates to v24.10.0, would i be able to view my budget on Pikapods and on the desktop app too? When I try to open Pikapods budget it gives this - which I am assuming is what you described which was the exported file is the latest version and pikapods is 1 version behind.

Thanks so much for the quick response! I really appreciate it!

Yes, once pikapods is updated to the latest version (happens automatically a few days after the release goes out) - you will be able to use pikapods too.

An option that I would recommend while using pikapods is to consider using the PWA on your desktop as well as on mobile. The PWA will never be ahead of pikapods version and will update with pikapods automatically. On desktop it will look just like an app. It wont have the backup functionality the true desktop app has, but if you are using pikapods you already have a form of backup.

What is PWA? Would it be the desktop app https://actualbudget.org/download? So the best, is to just continue using the desktop app I just downloaded with the PikaPods server connection rather than going to the website on Chrome - right? And since there is a PikaPods server connection there is already a backup so I can just keep using the desktop version?

Do I have that correct? :)

PWA (progressive web app) is when your device turns a web page into an "app". It looks like an app, acts like an app, etc. From desktop you should see this icon in your url bar when viewing Actual via your pikapods server.

click that to install the PWA and your computer will add Actual as an app on your device. It should even work offline.

That makes so much sense! As of right now, I'll use the desktop app then once Pikapods has updated to the latest version, I'll do use the PWA going forward and delete the desktop app. I assume as I'm using the desktop app now, any new transactions and changes I add will save and be in latest version of PikaPods.

Thanks so much for the tips and also all the help in the answer to my error! I really appreciate the quick response & assistance! :)

You should be fine until pikapods updates and not lose anything. You probably should do an export when you change apps just in case.
