What happened?

After updating Actual Budget, the language setting unexpectedly resets to "System Default" (which matches my OS language, French), even though I had manually and explicitly selected "English" in the settings prior to the update.

The application seems to lose my custom language preference during the update process instead of persisting it.

How can we reproduce the issue?

  1. Have an OS set to a language other than English (e.g., French Windows 11).
  2. Open Actual Budget, go to Settings, and manually change the language to English.
  3. Update Actual Budget to a newer version.
  4. Open the application after the update and check the language settings.

Where are you hosting Actual?

None

What browsers are you seeing the problem on?

No response

Operating System

Windows 11

I suspect there is a race condition in writing to the global-prefs.json file. Will look into this soon.

@plarguin Would you be willing to try this build out and see if it fixes the issue?

@MikesGlitch , I download the official build and tried to reinstall it and I got this message when Actual is opening.
https://github.com/actualbudget/actual/releases/latest/download/Actual-windows-x64.exe

Please update Actual!
It looks like you are using an outdated version of the Actual client. Your budget data has been updated by another client, but this client is still on the old version. For a better experience, please update Actual to the latest version.

If you cannot update Actual right now, you can find the latest version on app.actualbudget.org. You can use it until your client is updated.

Should I just run with your build and wait until there is a new official build?

@plarguin you can either reinstate a backup from before you used the test build or keep using the test build till next release. Up to you.

Desktop app takes backups automatically, you can reinstate one via the budget menu.
