  • Would you like to implement this feature?

Pitch: what problem are you trying to solve?

I am newer to budgeting and one thing I'm currently doing is just trying to understand my cash flow and then improve upon where I am misspending. I've been inputting all my receipts into Actual Budget over the last 8 months or so and have been meticulously grouping / categorizing my spending habits. I'm not technically budgeting yet, just watching where my money tends to be going.

As a response to cash flow observance, it would be nice to be able to create a report that tracks current spend (for example: monthly) in various groups / categories to average spend over a set duration of time. This would allow me to keep an active view on my average spending over the last 6 months (for example) and try to stay below that for the current month. I guess it's a variation of the envelope system... just a bit more visual and without setting an actual envelope budget - it would be based on averages.

Describe your ideal solution to this problem

A variation of a bar chart report would be nice. Perhaps a dual bar chart of sorts. I'm sure there might be a better way to display the data though. I believe this would be a good report option. One bar current month and specified group or category, second bar average 6 months and specified group or category. Repeat for other groups or categories. Adjustable duration / time frame (1mo, 3mo, 6mo, 12mo, etc) options.

Teaching and learning

Put it in as an option in the reports section.
